Does The Matching Gift Designation Have to Match the Primary Gift Designation?

  • 1.  Does The Matching Gift Designation Have to Match the Primary Gift Designation?

I have a donor who made a gift from their DAF which they designated to Annual Fund (we are a private school).

The donor is applying for a match from their employer and they want to designate the match to support our Capital Campaign.

The matching company has no restrictions on supporting capital campaigns, and no restrictions on matching DAF gifts as long as the donor is the DAF is "solely funded by the eligible participant".

Is there any problem with this matching gift supporting a different funding area from the primary gift? It feels somehow just wrong to me but I can't substantiate a position based upon my gut. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge! -Carol

Carol, you should first confirm that the employer will match non-employee gifts.  A DAF is not the employee and most companies will only match their employee, and maybe their spouse.  Not a third-party.

But to your question, where the company match goes will depend on the company matching policy.  Most do not specify.  Some will indicate where the money CANNOT go.
