    I'm new to my institution where advancement implemented Raiser's Edge in January 2019. Am now being asked if the college (whose underlying ERP is Ellucian/Banner) can drop the advancement module in Banner.

    I came from an institution that converted to RE in 2014 but was never asked if the Ellucian/Banner advancement module could or should be dropped. Appreciate thoughts/perspectives from anyone who has dealt with this in the past.

    I worked at an institution that had this same scenario.  I thought it pretty important to keep Banner Advancement to manage payroll deductions. We had a report that the output of which was imported into RE with a custom utility. 

    It worked for us but in full disclosure it was a big job to do this each payroll for over 1200 employees each time it was run.

    Kim, like Teresa, I have worked with organizations that had to retain an old system or module as they could not figure out a seamless way to move some functionality.  Sadly, this often is attributed to constructing non-standard "workarounds" for the prior system.  The institution implements the new system with every intention of dismantling those workarounds but then has difficulty doing so.  I know of one institution that has been paying for the "old" system for three YEARS now because of this.  Sigh.

    Long story short, if you and IT and Finance all agree that the module serves no use now or in the future and that NXT has successfully replaced all functionality, then I believe you can drop the license for the now unused module.  But this is not solely an Advancement decision.  Your IT Governance Committee should be asked to validate your plans!

    Kim, I think you have received really valuable information based on real-life experiences. I can see one more possibility. If your current Banner Advancement set up is pouring data into your ERP system, then you might have to develop a custom solution to replicate that connection from RE. You will need to conduct a cost/benefit analysis of this and decide if it's worth it, however, especially with a host of new integration methodologies and techniques available, (and Blackbaud opening up their API), this is not as daunting a prospect as it used to be before.
