Non-responsive donor

We received a gift in December from a donor.  Her note, and I'm paraphrasing, said:

I'm not designating this gift but would like it to go to XXXXX, where I used to work, if possible.

We've tried several times (>3, including letter, email and phone) to contact her to clarify.

We don't have that particular area currently so they money wouldn't be spent.

We need to process this gift one way or another and close December.

What are our options?  Gift is in excess of $1,000 but less than $10,000.

Record the gift into a Suspense or Holding account.  Issue a receipt thanking them for their gift and enclose a note asking them to contact you to review distribution options.

I agree with John and also would encourage you to set a deadline. Something like, "If we don't hear back from you by [date] then we will designate this gift to [most closely related area]."
