Cost of postage - GIK

  • 1.  Cost of postage - GIK

    Posted 05-11-2021 10:14 AM

    Good morning,

Some of our reunion volunteers are mailing postcards to classmates to encourage them to come back for reunion.  Can we count the price of the postage as a gift in kind for the volunteers?  It would be a small amount, but they are saving the institution money to benefit the University.

    Thank you!

You could.  But there's a bunch of work and documentation involved if you want to give them "hard" credit and issue a GIK receipt.  You will want the proof of purchase, a copy of the credit card statement or canceled check verifying the legal donor, and some way of validating they used 100% of that postage on your behalf.  But, yes, I think these expenditures would qualify as a GIK.
