Docusign for IRS Form 8283?

  • 1.  Docusign for IRS Form 8283?

Does anyone know if the IRS permits a Docusign signature on form 8283? Their website is confusing...seems like some forms it is okay on and others not.

    Thanks!

We cannot speak for the donors' signatures - or their appraiser.  They will have to consult their own advisor.

However, for informational purposes any form the IRS allows electronic filing can also have electronic signatures.  And, in response to COVID-19, the IRS is accepting digital signatures on a whole series of forms not normally available for electronic submission:

FWIW, when I filed my 2019 taxes and needed to submit an 8283, while I could send the form in, I couldn't (through TurboTax) with the required signatures.  I had to send in a separate Form 8453 with the signed 8283.  If you look at the 8453 form it lists all the forms it must accompany.

As the 8283 isn't currently listed on the above website, my guess is you still need to physically sign.  But it's only September and I am willing to bet a cup of coffee that more forms will be listed before the 2020 filing season begins.

    PS

I would not sign any 8283 for the tax year 2020 - physically or electronically - until January.  The IRS routinely changes this form.  And the new version does not typically come out until the winter (November-January).

Last year the IRS issued a new 8283 in November 2019 specifically for the 2019 filing year.  In the past, I cannot begin to count the number of cases I heard about where nonprofit organizations gave donors old 8283s to complete (you should NEVER do that!), only to have the return rejected as incomplete for using the wrong 8283.

Note that the 2019 8283 does not have an electronically fillable field for ANY of the three signatures.
