Unrestricted pledge

    Hi everyone and happy FY21!

I hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy.

I am curious to know if there are any FASB and GAAP restrictions for booking a pledge for unrestricted gifts (annual fund) across fiscal years. For example, if a donor pledges in FY20 for a FY21 donation. Is there anything preventing us with booking this as FY20 pledges for annual fund?

    Thank you,

    Marta

None that I am aware of.  When I was at Duke University many years ago, we encouraged three-year pledges to our annual fund.

The "trick" in accepting these pertains to recognition levels, societies, and years of membership.  For example, let's say you have both $10,000 and $25,000 annual fund recognition societies.  I make a three-year $30,000 pledge.  Do you treat me as a member of the $25,000 society?  Or just $10,000 since that is all I will pay this year?  And then how do you systematically track those memberships across fiscal years not only for society designation but also years of giving - especially if I decide to pay off the entire three-year pledge in the current year?

I must tell you that these discussions took months to resolve - and then through our programmers for a few loops!  But we worked it all out!
