Multiple names on a gift check.

    Hello, I hope you are all well.
     
    How do you handle multiple names on a gift check. Who's name is used for the gift receipt? We use the name on top. 
    Are there any IRS rules or industry standards about issuing gift receipts in the name of two people?

    Hello John,
    This is an old thread, but I would like to make it clear if this this also applies to a check that has a family foundation listed in the first line, and then an individual name on the second line (no title such as TTEE or Trustee, etc.), followed by the address? In my case, the individual name on the second line also signed the check.  Does this let a family foundation skirt the bifurcation issue on purchasing a gala ticket? (the person who signed the check also sent in a personal check for the non-tax deductible portion).

    The description provided sounds exactly like a bifurcation.  The Foundation appears to be the legal donor in this case.  As such, no tangible benefits can be offered to them.  Nor can an individual pay for the non-deductible portion.
