Deceased Alumni Policy

    Hi,

Was wondering what others were doing in this situation:

An alumni is found to be deceased but there is a surviving spouse on the their constituent record. Are you creating a separate record for the Spouse as a 'friend'? Options my team has discussed:

    - Only continue to solicit spouse if the deceased alum was a recent donor (SYBUNT 3 max)
    - Send a mailing asking if spouse would like to still receive information (about 2 months after a condolence card is sent)

The goal here is also to give the spouse the opportunity to make annual gifts in memory or bequests. Your thoughts please! Thanks.

    Best,

    Jeff

Jeff, my policy since the 1980s has been to always create a record for the spouse/legal partner.  Then link the two records together for automatic soft-credit.  Spouses are people too - not just a name on the other spouse's record.  They have their own names, employment records, interests, and activities.

Some of the biggest "easy" money we rose at Duke in the 1990s was by obtaining spouse employment data and securing matching gifts when their partner donated.

When an alum dies, the partner often remains connected in a similar way.  I would not treat them any differently than when the alum was alive until they instruct you otherwise.  However, if the alum had previously been coded "do not solicit" I would likely continue that practice.  But I would continue to send regular non-solicitation communications.
