Tracking Gofundme donations

    Hey friends,

One of our constituents has set up a Gofundme to create a memorial on one of our campuses in honor of a recently deceased alumnus. They are still gathering funds (and are at over 3x their original goal). We are in the midst of discussing where and what kind of memorial tribute they would like. Many of the donors are already donors to our school, including one or two board members.

Once the fundraiser is complete, I would like to ensure that we get all of these donors and donated amounts in system. If folks have been in similar situations, how have you handled this? I am wondering if I should do a soft credit similar to someone giving through a YourCause? We can't issue tax receipts for this, I assume, though it would be nice if we could.

(side note - before y'all childe me, the gofundme was set up without our knowledge. We knew they were raising funds but not via this platform. We are in the midst of getting set up with a GiveCampus or something similar, so in future we can be more in control of things like this)

As you note, this is where Third-Party Fundraising policies are helpful.  You are correct in that tax receipts cannot be issued.

I'd create a "Various Donors" record and credit the sum of all funds to that account.  Provided the constituent is doing a good job of tracking names, addresses, and amounts, you could issue soft-credits according to those records.

I have nothing to add or change to John's procedure. I wouldn't feel bad about not being able to send tax receipts. If anything, the success of the campaign suggests that the tax deduction may not be such an important factor for those donors. I think ongoing decentralization is something organizations will have to grapple with - you won't be able to get everyone using GiveCampus. I think we have to continue thinking about crediting and the data structures behind it in more granular ways as giving behaviors continue to evolve.

We recently went through a process with GoFundMe's new charity platform for a campaign to support our drug research & innovation unit in re COVID-19. It was a case of someone about to go off the reservation and our leadership asking me to help them do it officially as something of a test case. Since we went through this new charity-focused platform, we were able to choose how payments were processed and had them all run through PayPal Charitable, which is essentially a DAF and which issued receipts to the donors. We then got a check "directly" from PayPal Charitable and acted like we would for a DAF distribution. We entered the gift under the "DAF" and soft credited all of the donors (we had to work with GFM to get the level of detail we needed, but they eventually came through).

I know this isn't exactly your situation, but I thought I'd at least put it out there for the archives if anyone else runs into this in the future. They raised nearly $40K, which was more than I was expecting. But I don't know that we'll be doing it again any time soon.
