Good morning and Happy New Year!!!

We are a medium size shop, around 30 staff members raising on average 55M annually. Our campaigns have been around 500M.

We are envisioning growth and would like to see what an effective org structure looks like. The main questions are:

Where do you place annual giving?

    Is stewardship a standalone function?

How about Board Relations and principal giving?

Where does planned giving and CFR live?

I am looking at this community to learn what works best, Would you be willing to share your organizational charts with me and any piece of advice?

    Thank you!

Can you share your current organizational chart?  That will help answer your questions.  However, what we won't be able to address are internal politics.  What we might think would work best might not be possible if there are turf issues.  So, please let us know if we should be mindful of any feelings that could be hurt!

    Thanks John,

Attached is our current Org Chart

To note – we have three people retiring within 2 years, the VP or Principal Gifts, the Sr Director of Annual Giving and the Sr Director of planned giving,

Annual Giving is an area that could use a lot of improvement, but is it ok to split a team?

I am not following the reference to "splitting the team."  In looking at the current org chart I would leave annual giving right where it is and hire some strong talent to replace the departing senior director.

Often, Annual Giving will report to the VP for Development.  And that might work here, too.

Planned Giving, Principal Giving, and CFR seem fine where they are, too.  If the VP for Development was also departing I might suggest changes.  But other than possibly moving AG under the VP I do not see a need to change the current structure.  Although I wonder if the Principal Gift Strategist should "share" an admin - especially during a campaign.

Stewardship, for me, is parallel to donor relations and, combined, form one unit.  I prefer that unit under Advancement Services.

I do not see on your org chart where Board Relations currently sits.  Often, that is not even a 25% job and I see it most often resting with the Executive Assistant to the EVP as that person is typically the go-between the EVP and the Board anyway.

    Does that help?
