Who can serve as an agent of a charity

Each year, RMHC has a team for the Chicago Marathon. Our team consists of about 1,000 people who run on behalf of the charity. Many of the runners collect cash from family and friends, then the runner writes a check (or checks) to RMHC and provides the names and contact information for the donors. Since RMHC authorizes the runners to fundraise on our behalf, could we consider the runners as agents of RMHC and issue receipts to the donors of cash gifts assuming the runner provides all the necessary information?

    Thank you,

    Stephanie

I hate to say this, but I think only your counsel and CFO can answer this question.  My guess is that with the proper authorization in writing, the answer would be yes.  But legal agent status is a legal assignment and therefore your internal legal/fiscal types would have to provide your answer.
