Gift to a Sister Charity Located Overseas

The Hospice of the Western Reserve has a long-standing relationship with a hospice in South Africa. From time-to-time, gifts are given designated to the sister hospice.

What are the best practices for us regarding acknowledging -- specifically language beyond acknowledging receipt and thanking the donor -- and recording the gift?

According to my understanding of what I've read, such gifts are not tax-deductible. Am I mistaken?

    Thanks!

The tax-deductibility question is best answered by your attorney.  Much depends on the relationship with the other organization and your institutional mission.  It is possible for these gifts to be tax-deductible.  But maybe not to you - only to the other organization.  If you are serving solely as a conduit or pass-through organization it is unlikely you can treat these as gifts to your organization.  And, unless you are authorized by some legal standing and framework to issue receipts for the other organization, you should not do so.

I would require a legal ruling from my attorney regarding all of the above and then do only as they suggest.
