Planned gifts for capital projects

  • 1.  Planned gifts for capital projects

I am looking for any CASE documentation regarding accepting planned gifts to support a capital project.  Is this an institutional decision or is there a recommendation from CASE.

    Any insight would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

CASE does not have an opinion here - at least not in writing.  However, CASE does argue for pledge periods to not exceed five years.  While irrevocable planned gifts are not pledges, following the five-year rule of thumb only makes sense.  You cannot build a building based on a planned gift.  You have not spendable cash - and might not for decades.  In fact, many institutions employ an even short pledge payment period of three years for capital commitments since building costs do nothing but go up.

BTW, CASE does state, on page 277, that separate goals should be established for "future commitments."  Planned gifts are different and should be treated as such.
