Question about how to value a dataset

  • 1.  Question about how to value a dataset

    Posted 13 days ago

    Hello, all –

If a company were to give your institution a proprietary dataset (e.g. market data that's typically sold to corporations) for classroom/educational use, how would you determine the value you book in your database?  Could you value it based on what the company's typical selling price is for the data?  Or would it have a far different value because it's not a tangible object?

Thank you in advance for any thoughts you might be able to share.

    Thanks,

I would first verify that I was being given ownership of the dataset, not just using it without paying a fee.  Your description makes it sound more like the latter.  In which case, there isn't any gift to value - what is being given is "partial interest."  And even if someone other than the company purchased the dataset and gave it to you to use, the gift recording value would be the same as what anyone else could purchase the dataset for.
