DAF to Purchase Journal Ads?

  • 1.  DAF to Purchase Journal Ads?

We're updating our Gift Acceptance Policy, with lots of language around DAFs. One are where I can't seem to find confirmation is around Journal Ads for events (that don't include tickets or other benefits). What's the stance around donors using DAFs to purchase journal ads?

    Hi Hillary,

The very fact that you call it "purchasing" makes me skeptical that this is a charitable gift.

You cannot use DAF gifts for anything that is not otherwise tax-deductible.  So if these ads are strictly for sale then they are not charitable.

I assume Hillary is referring to a journal of congratulatory/grateful messages accompanying a fundraising event or campaign, rather than commercial advertising opportunity.  So long as the message is non-commercial, those ads don't count as a direct benefit. As such, I think a DAF could 'purchase' those ads.
