Blackbaud Has Entered the DAF Business

Blackbaud has now established a DAF:

Apparently all gifts from YourCause will go through this DAF.  From their, gifts will go to "suggested" charities.

Just thought I would brighten your Friday!

Whoa, Blackbaud acquired YourCause? So, when a donor gives, they will receive a tax receipt from Blackbaud..correct?

Blackbaud acquired YourCause nearly two years ago - January of 2019 I believe.

Dina, I just realized that I did not answer your specific question regarding receipts.

Blackbaud, the company, will not issue a receipt.  However, instead of YourCause (or others that go through YourCause) issuing receipts, you will now receive a receipt from "The Blackbaud Giving Fund."  This donation is not from Blackbaud, the company, but a separate legal entity (and donor-advised fund).

    Good afternoon, everyone.

We have received our first Blackbaud Giving Fund gift. It says that it is made on behalf of "Mastercard Impact Fund and its donors" - our question is, who would you consider the donor the Blackbaud Giving Fund or the Mastercard Impact Fund? We are very interested in hearing how others are recording DAF gifts (especially in RE)- so any information to share is welcomed.

    Thanks!

The Mastercard Impact Fund isn't a legal entity, I assume, , so the donor to hard credit would be the BBGF. You might choose to create a Mastercard Impact Fund, associate them w BBGF and the donor-advisor, and soft-credit them as well, if you feel that data will be valuable for you to track. But it's just the name of an account in BBGF.

I wasn't clear on the legal status until I poked around and found this on the mastercardcenter.org site:

"In 2018, Mastercard committed 20 percent of its savings from U.S. and European tax reform to establish the Mastercard Impact Fund, a non-profit organization that will make up to $500 million in charitable grants."

But I agree with the conclusion regardless that the gift is from BBGF!

Lisa, I must profess to being unfamiliar with Mastercard Impact Fund.  It's only been around for about three years and I have not personally been part of the receiving end of their gifts.  I only know that it is a separate legal nonprofit entity.  It was initially called the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth Fund.

However, it seems to me that they have chosen to handle at least some of their distributions through the Blackbaud Giving Fund.  We know that is a donor-advised fund.  Unless you have information to the contrary, you would need to record the gift as coming from that DAF.  With soft-cred to the Mastercard FUnd.

Certainly, call one or both organizations for confirmation.
