Counting Gifts from Affiliates

  • 1.  Counting Gifts from Affiliates

    Hello, brain trust!

I have been wracking my brain for all of the reasons that we should not count gifts coming from our affiliate hospital to the university. I'm looking for any other reasons or arguments to make sure all bases are covered in preparation for a discussion with leadership. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

    • The hospital is under our fundraising umbrella and we can't make a gift to ourselves
      • the pushback here is that all funds are coming from services provided by the hospital
      • I have trouble wrapping my head around this one as CASE doesn't specifically exclude counting gifts from affiliated entities.
    • The affiliate hospital was formed by the state legislature and governed by a board primarily appointed by the governor. Does this count as a government agency? I haven't found any indication of tax dollars supporting the hospital.

Any other thoughts? I would be interested to hear if anyone out there is counting gifts from affiliated hospitals and under what circumstances.

    Thanks for your sage advice!

Your first point is the main point.  Additionally, you can and should count gifts being made to the affiliate.  If you also counted gifts from the affiliate that would be double-counting.  Further, as your affiliate any money they "make" is more profit than charitable.

If you need something in writing, see page 46 of the CASE Standards and paragraph 5.1.2 - Supporting Organizations.  CASE does address this issue!
