Donation from the University Library to a local museum

    Hi all,

This is actually something I've never encountered before - the University Library at my institution would like to donate a large number of books to a history museum here in town.
They have received the proper clearance from purchasing - but they need approval from Advancement as well.
Why would they need approval from Advancement to MAKE a donation?
    I'm just curious.

My first (and only) guess is that some of the titles planned for the donation were previously donated to you.  You may need to research that and, if any were, communicate with the original donors.  Also, if any of the volumes are valuable - $5,000 - and had been donated within the last three years, an 8282 might be required.

    Thank you John!
And yes, that is the case, they were donated - but over 20 years ago.
So the 8282 should not be required, correct?
The donor has since passed away but we are trying to locate the next of kin to get an approval of some sort.

No 8282 is required after three years from the original date of the gift.

But while I have the floor, some may not realize that an 8282 is required even when a donation is transferred to another organization - within three years.

But you are off the hook here.  But I applaud your efforts in tracking down heirs.  They will be glad to know that the donation will live on in a historic way!
