Gift to program for student event admission tickets

One of our sports teams would like to solicit their alumni to sponsor tickets to cover the cost of admission so that our student body can attend their upcoming playoff games, recognizing the power of their fans and that the ticket price could be prohibitive for students.

Can we consider this a charitable gift for the donors?

Good question. Yes, I'm wondering if others have made the argument that in a similar way that gifts to sports programs which benefit our student athletes, the student body and the community we serve are charitable gifts, and which can be used to purchase things like jerseys and away-meals, is providing access to the team's sporting event a viable use of the gift?  Or does that feel like a bridge too far?  I'm hoping not to have to re-invent the wheel if others have already had this conversation at their institution?
