Coach gift in kind

    Hi,

An athletic coach just gave a "gift in kind" of a sports organizational membership to my institution. This memberships states:
"As a member of College Services, institutions have access to a broad range of benefits including legislative services, eligibility for awards and recognitions, individual membership for the head coach, and many others."

I'm thinking this is not a gift in kind since the coach is benefiting from this membership. Is that correct?

    Thank you!

There isn't quite enough information here.  Would Warren Wilson have purchased this membership?  And who benefits other than this coach?

I am inclined to agree with you.  However, if this feels "gray," let the coach seek a reimbursement from the College thus indicating the College supports this activity.  The coach, then, can make a cash donation if they choose to.

    John,

The coach informed me that the membership only benefits the soccer program and that it would have been purchased anyway. In this case, it does seem like a gift in kind. Would you agree?

    Thank you,
    Kelly

I am not convinced.  If the College would have purchased the membership, why didn't the College purchase the membership?

But, yes, I generally do agree that the gift could be recognized as such assuming the College would have approved the expenditure/reimbursement.  You will want to get a copy of the canceled check or credit card receipt to give legal credit to the buyer.

Thanks John. I was informed that his budget is really small which is why he decided to purchase the membership as a gik.
