Tracking/Segmenting Geo Regions or Metro codes in Raiser's Edge

    Hello Hive!

I need some advice/guidance on how to establish a system for segmenting our constituents by regions, metro codes, geo locations, etc.

For those users that have Raiser's Edge or NXT, how does your organization determine regional areas?
Do you code them, and how?
    What resources do you use?
    How are they defined?
How many segmentations does your org have?

The list of questions could go on and on. I'm starting from the ground up and could use all the help I can get.

    Thank you

Hey Lindsey! A few years ago I set up a system of attributes for Metropolitan Statistical Areas. Somewhere out on the internet I found an Excel file that listed every MSA in the United States by ZIP code. I exported all our constituents, used VLOOKUP to match their ZIP with the associated MSA, and imported the attributes. Every six months or so I do an update to catch anyone who has moved and get their MSA right.

We're a K-12 school that does not store campus addresses for our young alumni in college, so I had to make a manual file to match up all the colleges with their associated MSAs. I do a similar process with this, matching the college instead of the home ZIP.

Then I set up queries for the cities we engage with most, often using the Combined Statistical Area instead of the MSA (so for example, Washington, DC and Baltimore are separate MSAs within the same CSA). Then we'll invite all those with the appropriate home or college MSA to an event.

NXT has a great mapping tool that in theory would make this process unnecessary (and lets you further fine-tune if, say, you want to limit your invitees to the Buckhead area for an Atlanta alumni event), but we'll still need to do it for now to capture those college students until we have a better system.

Hope that helps -- let me know if I can provide any further info!
