Check from a trust

    Hi all,
    We received a check from a trust that is established at a Foundation. The donor is deceased and the foundation is sending us money based on donor's wishes.
    Would you put the donation on the Foundation record and and soft credit the deceased?

    I would call the Foundation and find out if the account from which the check is coming belongs to a separate legal entity (family foundation, individual, or legally established trust).  I doubt the gift is from the Foundation itself (it sounds like it might be a community foundation).

    Thank you, John. Just called and it's their individual trust they set up through the Colorado Episcopal Foundation.

    So I would issue a receipt in the name of that trust. The community foundation does not require anything, including soft-credit - although nothing prevents you from issuing that. They are acting more like a bank.
