Gift or conflict of interest?

  • 1.  Gift or conflict of interest?

Can a company that sells software to your institution be given gift credit for waiving registration costs for University employees at their tech conference? Or is that a conflict of interest? To be more specific, if a company from who we purchase software offers to waive our employees' registration fees at their tech conference, is this countable as a gift? Or is it just a nice thing to do?

I am not sure that "conflict of interest" is the correct phrase.  But it is certainly not a gift.  It is akin to a free licence or seat; or an airline giving you a free ticket; or a hotel giving you a free room.

Sure it is nice.  Maybe even worthy of soft credit if the "free" registration is not included in the contract.
