Named Space Calculator - Equation

    Dear All

I was wondering if you have an equation you use to calculate the value of naming a space?

Also, is there a way to calculate the philanthropic cost of a building?

    Thank you

Often, for new construction, the "price," to name a space, equals at least 50% of the construction cost.

For an existing space, there really isn't a calculator or formula.  It is often determined by checking around at peer institutions to see what they have charged.  In other words, it is "market-driven."  And those costs or amounts typically change over time.  Many organizations I have worked with revalue naming opportunities every 3-5 years.

    Good morning,

Here is a sample of our calculation worksheet. This provides us with a baseline. We also base the gift minimums on the prospect levels and comparable market values. I tour each space as well to evaluate the proper value. We only have our valid for 5 years. We also have a program calculation that one of my staff created but I can't find it at the moment.

    More resources are below.

    I hope this is helpful!

    Hello,

I had a bunch of attachments but I guess it was placed in the library.

All FundSvcs attachments automatically go to the library - but the link is found at the top of our email messages.  You will see the link "view attached" in this snip from your email:

Wow - Sarah - that's a ton of great material!

Friends, one of Sarah's attachments (now in the library) has a gobbledygook file name.  Do NOT be afraid of it!  While I cannot rename it (it is the first file in her list), it is actually an "Overview of the Calculations for Facility Naming Opportunities."

    Hi Farida,

At Caltech, we've developed a formula and procedure for determining minimums for naming spaces.  See attached. We look at the size of the space, as well as factor in utility, location, and uniqueness in our formula.

    Best,

    Mark

Interesting thread.  One cost element that might be considered if it does not exist on the various spreadsheets - is an additional percentage of the actual room/building cost be added that reflects future maintenance, repairs, utilities and eventual replacement/upgrade.  Our policy and calculations include such a percentage to fund an endowment for facilities maintenance and upkeep.

    Excellent point, Rick.

I haven't seen a national "formula" for this component.  However, when associated with a new building, I have seen an estimated 10% of the construction cost dedicated to the endowment.

Said another way, if you seek to raise $10,000,000 for a new building, make it an $11,000,000 campaign and put $1,000,000 in a Facility Support Endowment.
